Go big or go home

A hash tag as a title for this post?  Since when has this blog been Twitter?  The answers are yes and never.  The hashtag seems simplistic yet its a banner.  An emblem of a movement to bring back the television show Community. I recently performed an informative speech on Community, and a persuasive speech on watching Community and to save Community.  This was for my Comm 101 class which meant that I had to do research and have sources to cite.  It added to my credibility, but what really set my speeches apart from others was my usage of ethos.

NBC decided to put Community on the sidelines to see how other shows would fare in its place.  This was distraught for the dedicated fan base.  There are many groups banning together to show their support of the show in hopes to influence the NBC executives to bring back Community  for six seasons and a movie (hopeful).  I am a huge fan of the show and think that it deserves to stay on the air not because I like it, but because that the show goes out of its way to break the molds that television sitcoms are wearing out in today's television.


In my opinion Dan Murray summed up the scenario best in his article on Badhaven.com.

"In the end it’ll come down to the viewing figures and how much money can be made from the show so all of these gestures may prove to be moot. I guess what’s impressed me is that people are trying their best to save something they love and hey, in a world where nonchalance and indifference are prevalent standpoints, it was nice to see that people take an interest and fight to save something they love. Honestly, the main reason I’m even writing this is because the latest episode involved an observational gag that made me laugh out loud. You know the laugh I mean, that embarrassing laugh we all have, the one that’s too loud and too long and which you never truly want other people to be around when you do. It’s the laugh that means you’ve just seen something that’s actually brilliant…………and I, for one, don’t want to lose that."

Christmas

Christmas is coming.  There is a lack of snow in Iowa which in turn makes this season seem misplaced.  Winter can almost be categorized by the snow and cold temperatures especially in Iowa.  The gift giving and gift receiving of the Christmas tradition will take place soon if not already.  As we look back though I hope we remember to thank God.

Oskaloosa Symphony

Here is a photo of a strapping young man in this year's Oskaloosa Symphony Concert.  I came back as an Oskaloosa Alumni.  Nerves infected me quicker than the virus from the Hershey-Chase experiment.  I hadn't put a lot of practice into my viola and I became worried that I would be a let down.  In the end, however, things were fine.  I actually surprised myself at my level of play.  The three hour rehearsal prior to the concert really allowed me to harness some of my previous ability.  I just like this photo because it really emphasizes my blue bow.  Typically bows are brown or black, but I like to keep classy and original with the blue.

Facebook Friends

I keep realizing that I have a number of people who I am friends with on Facebook that I don't really know.  People that went to my school that I may have only talked to once.  As I entered college this year there were even a number of high school freshman that added me just because we had a number of mutual friends.  Facebook has changed the definition of the word friend. 

A friend used to mean so much.  Some one who typically had similar interests that one could stand for a length of time.  At least in general terms, but for everyone who has had a friend it is hard to put into terms.  I know that I can't really describe my friendships, but I do know that I don't typically consider someone a friend if I have only met them once or went to the same school. 

Needless to say, I have been deleting a lot of people on my friends list.  Also, my return to Oskaloosa for Christmas break has enlightened me to the true nature of people.  A lot of the people with whom I graduated with from high school are off putting now.  Its not so much that we have changed and yet it is.
